New Year, New Playground

A group of children climb on playground equipment

As Browne students came back to campus after winter break, they were thrilled to see that our new lower school playground was open for business! Donations to the Annual Fund and Auction Emotional Appeal made this new campus feature possible.

The playground was the first phase of a three-phase renovation of our outdoor spaces. We can’t wait to move to phases two and three of our outdoor space redevelopment: a 30×60 foot pavilion behind the Middle School and a new playground by the carline circle.

Play is an important part of childhood. Head of Lower School Kim McCue commented, “Recess duty filled my heart this morning as every grade got to explore our fantastic new playground! The design was inspired by the children’s own work with the design thinking process in their innovation classes last school year. We listened to our kids and created the playground of their dreams! I often think of the Fred Rogers quotation, ‘Play is often talked about as if it were a relief from serious learning. But for children, play is serious learning.’ Children need play, actually, we all do, to live a balanced and healthy life. Play is how children regulate, communicate, develop, learn, and grow. This new space at Browne is another example of how we are committed to the whole child and cherishing childhood.”
