Kindness is Our Superpower: A Special Read-Aloud with Mrs. Otey

September 10, 2024

Today, our youngest learners at Browne Academy—Preschool, Junior Kindergarten, and Kindergarten—had the special opportunity to enjoy a read-aloud session with our Head of School, Mrs. Otey. The featured book, *Kindness is My Superpower* by Alicia Ortego, highlighted the powerful message that even the smallest acts of kindness can make a big difference. From sharing toys to offering a smile, the students learned how simple actions can help create a caring and supportive environment.

Why It’s Important to Teach Kindness to Younger Children

At Browne Academy, we believe that teaching kindness to children at an early age is essential. Early childhood is a crucial time for developing social-emotional skills, and kindness plays a central role in building strong relationships and fostering empathy. When children learn to be kind, they are better equipped to handle conflicts, show respect for others, and contribute to a positive classroom environment.

Teaching kindness also encourages inclusivity. When children understand the value of kindness, they become more accepting of differences, which builds a strong sense of community within the classroom. At Browne Academy, we prioritize these lessons to ensure our students grow not only academically but also emotionally, preparing them to be compassionate leaders in the future.

Continuing the Conversation at Home

Parents can continue to reinforce the importance of kindness at home by incorporating books and activities that encourage empathy and thoughtfulness. Here are some excellent book recommendations to help foster kindness in young children:

– *Kindness is My Superpower* by Alicia Ortego
– *Have You Filled a Bucket Today?* by Carol McCloud
– *Be Kind* by Pat Zietlow Miller
– *The Kindness Quilt* by Nancy Elizabeth Wallace
– *A Little Spot of Kindness* by Diane Alber

– PBS Kids – Kindness Activities: Interactive and fun ways to engage children in kind behavior.

By teaching kindness early, we are setting the foundation for students who not only excel academically but who also care deeply about the well-being of others. Today’s read-aloud with Mrs. Otey was a reminder that kindness truly is a superpower—one that we can all share.
