On January 28, Browne Academy’s 8th graders won 2nd place in the Virginia state We the People competition! Sponsored by Virginia Civics and held at the University of Virginia, We the People engages students in the history and principles of the U.S. Constitution.

To prepare, We the People coach Alissa Kharkar divided Browne’s students into six teams, who each received two questions, including sub-topics, to study. Delving deep into their respective aspects of the Constitution, the teams wrote four-minute oral presentations addressing each prompt. Next they anticipated and researched questions judges might ask during simulated Congressional hearings at the state competition. Before heading to Charlottesville, the students had two dress rehearsals at Browne, complete with judges, tough questions, and thoughtful feedback.

The students all performed confidently during what would be a daunting task for most. Browne begins preparing students for public appearances and speaking from the ripe young age of three, when our youngest students perform on stage during assemblies and concerts. By the time they are in 8th grade, they are accustomed to being in front of an audience and adept at research, writing, and public speaking.

Kudos to Ariella B. and Grace L., Browne’s team who received the highest score from the judges. Congratulations to all our accomplished 8th graders who led Browne to 2nd place in this year’s state We the People competition! Appreciation goes to Ms. Kharkar and Glenn Siegal for guiding the 8th graders through their Constitutional journey.
