Music

June 27, 2023

Browne Academy recognizes the significance of the fine and performing arts and has a robust music program that engages, educates, and empowers. Our middle school music curriculum—both during the school day and through extracurricular opportunities—is designed to deepen students’ knowledge and appreciation of music through interactive experiences in music history, dramatic arts, vocal and instrumental performance, and dance. Music theory is supported by the developmental approaches of both the Orff Schulwerk and Kodály methods. Our middle school students continue to develop an appreciation and understanding of world music, building on what they learned in lower school. Music literacy is emphasized throughout the curriculum, as well as creativity and self-expression. Every grade includes composition and improvisation opportunities, whether through creating cadences in bucket drumming, writing original pop songs, or developing digital music projects. Instrumental experience is also a key component of the curriculum, with students using pitched and unpitched percussion, ukuleles, and digital tools. Students showcase their progress during annual Winter and Spring performances, building confidence and celebrating their musical journey in a positive and inclusive environment. Middle school students also have additional opportunities for musical engagement through Handbells, Choir, Woodwind Ensemble, and a Spring Musical. Seventh and eighth graders may audition for the district choir, giving them the chance to extend their vocal experience beyond the classroom.
