Spanish

Our Middle School Spanish program is designed to immerse students in the Spanish language while fostering awareness and respect for cultural diversity. As in the Lower School, instruction is dialogue-based at increasingly challenging, age-appropriate levels. Instruction happens exclusively in Spanish, utilizing a variety of teaching styles, including the Berlitz method and the Common Phrase model, to meet the diverse needs of students. Vocabulary is introduced using the four language areas: listening, speaking, reading, and writing, combined with culture. Grammar, inflection, syllable accents, and sentence structure become more of a focus as students gain the ability to communicate independently in the Spanish language. Spanish instruction involves a variety of hands-on activities and projects, in which the children make connections across all disciplines. Students engage in real-world discussions and studies about everything from their personal lives to fables and immigration. Field trips, guest speakers, and a variety of cultural activities and cross-curricular projects enhance learning and help prepare our students to take the National Spanish Exam in seventh and eighth grades.
